Dr. Trudy Larson, the current board President, has been a professor at the University of Nevada, School of Medicine since 1984, specializing in infectious diseases and in July 2011 became Director of the School of Community Health Sciences at UNR where she oversees a growing undergraduate and MPH program. Her major fields of interest are HIV/AIDS and immunizations. She has been active in caring for HIV patients at the HOPES clinic in Reno, in training health professionals about HIV and immunization throughout the state, nationally and internationally, and in conducting funded research. She was inducted into the Nevada Women’s Fund Hall of Fame in 1996, received the Distinguished Physician award from the Nevada State Medical Association in 1999 and was honored as a Healthcare Hero for Lifetime Achievement in 2008 for her work in HIV/AIDS. She has been active in the Nevada State AIDS Task Force, chaired the Nevada Immunization Advisory Committee and the Medicaid Advisory Committee. Dr. Larson attended the University of California, Irvine and University of California, Davis and completed her pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles where she saw her first AIDS patient in 1981 before there was a virus to blame or a name to the disease.
